Lately the advertising industry seems to be struggling to figure out how to not be racist and/or insensitive. A couple of weeks ago, Nivea lotion released a “white is purity” campaign on Facebook, and inevitably was forced to pull it a week later after viewers noticed how casually racist the ad’s message was. Similarly, Pepsi’s protest-themed ad featuring Kendall Jenner was barely up for 24 hours before the campaign was pulled.


Viewers claimed that the ad trivialized protesting, especially Black Lives Matter, with its penultimate moment of Kendall handing a Pepsi to a police officer resulting in joy and celebration. Despite the fact that the ad itself is a major source of the public’s ire, would the backlash have been as bad with a different face at the forefront of the campaign?
